Hope in the City Church

When STG Architects was designing a new addition for Hope in the City Church in Austin, TX, the team wanted to keep it modern and fresh, like the character of this relatively new, informal and rapidly growing church.  The youthful congregation expects to worship in a facility that is at once functional and uplifting.

Key elements of the interior included unique shapes and powerful colors that typically cannot be found in standard construction materials.  The STG team called on Newbold Stone to deliver two brightly colored, robust cone-shaped pillars, which would serve as anchor points for two different counter areas in the new foyer.  Through collaboration and color sample review, the designs turned out exactly as planned.

In the meantime, the architects had created some unique designs to ensure ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance in both the restroom and foodservice areas.  They learned, however, that their unique food area design could not be built using the originally spec’d slab counter material.  Enter Newbold Stone.

John’s background and experience in engineering allowed him to design a single-pour piece that met the design aesthetic and ADA compliance needs.  In order to accommodate the installation, with dramatic dimensions, the Newbold Stone team utilized GFRC as an alternative to full concrete, allowing them to overcome the design challenge of this massive piece and install a phenomenal product.

The Hope in the City project is an excellent showcase of the versatility in shape, color and style that Newbold Stone can deliver on time and on budget.
